I had such fun on Friday painting at Lowville Park that I went back again on Monday, and had another lovely afternoon on the bank of the creek. I had a lot of trouble again with my colours – particularly, this time, with my darks, because I took the tube of burnt umber out of my “pochade” box and forgot to replace it. Without my burnt umber/FUB mixture, I had trouble getting good darks. And I still had trouble getting the top layers to stay put, although that went a little better than last time. Still, I think this painting turned out a bit better than the first one – what do you think?
I’m beginning to think that Lowville is full of very nice people with a passion for vividly coloured toned canvases! Last time, it was the young man asking what the red symbolized. This time, I used reds and purples to underpaint the yellows and greens. Just as I finished sloshing it on the panel, I heard, “Look, Jess, she’s painting!” and found 2 little girls beside me. The younger, about 5 or 6 years old, informed me that she liked my picture and that she likes to paint, and then they dashed off to catch up to their family. So far, there has been a total absence of any negative reaction or comments, which is greatly improving my confidence level.
